The Guthrie Theater heats up March with Shakespeare's epic tragedy of suspicion, jealousy, and murder under the careful eye of one of the Twin Cities' best directors. Marion McClinton, whose long career includes a Tony nomination for August Wilson's King Hedley II and an Obie for the playwright's Jitney, has worked extensively in the local theater scene. In fact, his tight and insightful direction earned him a best director nod in last year's City Pages Best Of list. His turn with Othello (the Guthrie's first production in two decades) features a strong cast in the key triangle at the center of the play. Minneapolis native Peter Macon returns to the Guthrie in the title role. Local favorites Tracey Maloney and Stephen Yoakam play doomed Desdamona and conniving Iago. The play's complex set of motivations — Othello's sense of isolation as a black ruler in a largely white land; Iago's two-faced machinations that set him up as both friend and foe to Othello — offers much for the actors and the director to explore. The ensemble is packed with top talent as well, including Nathaniel Fuller, Raye Birk, Sun Mee Chomet, and Regina Marie Williams. In previews through Thursday, March 13.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 1 & 7 p.m. Starts: March 8. Continues through April 20, 2014
