When the Guthrie Theater produced the world premiere of Anthony Burgess's translation of French dramatist Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac in 1970, Twin Cities theatergoers were first witnesses to what would become a stage standard. The rhythmically exquisite adaptation, however, has long encountered criticisms from those who charge the stylized language with detracting from the secreted passion that propels Rostand's tale. Hoping to resuscitate the central romance, contemporary playwrights Michael Hollinger and Aaron Posner collaborated on a reinvigorated version that infuses more snap in the dialogue and more adrenaline in the action. Opening at Park Square Theater, this area premiere further bolsters Hollinger and Posner's intentions by enlisting Joe Chvala as director. Having made his mark as the founding artistic director of Flying Foot Forum, Chvala brings a dynamic energy to the tale of lovelorn swordsman Cyrano, whose insecurity over an unusually large nose causes him to communicate his heart's desire through a sincere (but romantically inept) substitute. With a standout cast that includes J.C. Cutler, Emily Gunyou Halaas, and Sam Bardwell, the production all but guarantees captivating performances. Factoring in a commitment to swashbuckling action, orchestrated by fight choreographer Annie Enneking, this energetically reworked Cyrano promises to provide a fresh transfusion of hot-blooded passion to a classic romance.
