Broken Bells (and the Shins) frontman James Mercer has one of the singular voices in the landscape of rock music, a glimmering falsetto-or-so. He was 29 when he recorded the first Shins album, but he still sounds much younger to this day. Broken Bells' other half is producer Brian Burton, a.k.a. Danger Mouse, who dots their latest release, After the Disco, with darting guitars, big drums, and bigger synths. For this collection, "The Remains of Rock & Roll" is the perfect closing-song title. Disco has surprises too, as when a multi-tracked Mercer does his best Bee Gees vocal on the title track. With Au Revoir Simone. 18+.
