More About

For Ten Thousand Things, staging a musical offers plenty more challenges than getting the rights and finding the correct cast. The company develops each production with multiple audiences in mind, from traditional theatergoers in the Twin Cities to outstate community centers to shelters and prisons. It can be tough enough for seasoned audiences to accept characters breaking out into song — but it can cause a real disconnect with other crowds. That has led to some remarkable interpretations in the past — recent years have seen intriguing adaptations of My Fair Lady and Man of La Mancha. Another arrives this winter with Meredith Wilson's examination of a fraudster butting heads with a small Iowa town in The Music Man. Lear deBessonet, whose past work with the company includes the aforementioned My Fair Lady along with As You Like It (and who won an Obie for last year's Good Person of Szechwan in New York), directs. This is a musical that can be as big as you want it, but will find life here with a small cast and limited staging. Luverne Seifert takes on the role of Harold Hill. He is joined by Aimee Bryant as Marian the Librarian, Sarah Agnew as Hill's old friend Marcellus, and Dennis Spears as Marian's mother. The balance of the characters will be brought to life by the talented quartet of Bradley Greenwald, Jim Lichtscheidl, Kimberly Richardson, and Ricardo Vazquez. (Photo by Paula Keller)
