After season cancellations, extensive fundraising, and the announcement of an upcoming change in leadership, Penumbra Theatre is ready to get back to what it does best: exploring the African-American experience through work on the stage. The first show of 2014 examines an event nearly 60 years in the past: a brutal murder that helped to spark the Civil Rights movement. In The Ballad of Emmett Till, playwright Ifa Bayeza examines the life, death, and longstanding impact of the Chicago teenager, who was beaten, mutilated, and killed for "flirting" with a white woman while visiting family in Mississippi. The musical piece explores the facets of the teenager, and the reaction to his murder in the black community and throughout America. Director Talvin Wilks makes his Penumbra debut, leading a top-notch cast that includes Sha Cage, H. Adam Harris, Darrick Mosley, Greta Oglesby, T. Mychael Rambo, and Mikell Sapp. Sanford Moore serves as music director. (Photo by Allen Weeks)
