New Orleans pianist and composer Tom McDermott distinguishes himself by an unusually broad musical palette — ragtime, stride, Brazilian choro, French musette, Cuban habanera, and swing. He deftly creates clever and surprising arrangements of iconic tunes (Longhair's "Tipitina," Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer") or originals. His recently released Bamboula, named for 19th-century composer Louis Gottschalk's signature piece, is a compilation of previously released tunes, but notably selected by musical savant Van Dyke Parks. Dukes of Dixieland trumpeter and bandleader Kevin Clark is coming with McDermott upriver, where they'll play with the local vintage music quartet Patty & the Buttons, who roam from trad jazz to jug band music and western swing.
