It's amazing what Karen Bit Vejle can do with a piece of paper and some sewing scissors. The Danish-Norwegian artist works in an unusual medium: psaligraphy, the art of cutting paper into paper art. Her creations, which have been featured in galleries around the world, as well as in Hermes store windows and Hilton and Brittania hotels, range from delicate, lacy pieces to artworks with bold, graphic designs. It takes a steady hand to make such pieces, as one wrong snip can wreck the final effect. She hopes that her calm and collected process bleeds into viewers' experiences taking in her art. "Everything in the world today is moving so fast, but psaligraphy is the opposite. It is slow art. It takes a very long time to cut and create," Vejle says. "We often forget to stop and reflect on our lives and our choices in life. I hope that when people come and see the exhibition that they will stop a little bit and pause." There will be an opening reception and artist's talk from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 24.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Jan. 24. Continues through May 25, 2014
