The young Clément Layes is the Charlie Chaplin of French performance art. His bona fides are unsurprising for a Frenchman whose work has an existential bent: circus arts, physical theater, studies in philosophy. Layes's recent work "Allege," part of the Walker Art Center's Out There series, conflates these influences in a solo tour de force in which water — dumped out of buckets, poured out of bottles, splashed on the floor, and transferred from glass to glass — is the principal medium. Layes balances one of those drinking glasses (sometimes empty, sometimes full) on his head — when he's not wiggling it across his forehead and down his cheek — for the performance's duration. Done largely in silence, except for sections featuring music by David Byrne, Layes's work utilizes everyday objects to examine transcendent ideas with grace and humor. (Photo by Dieter Haetwig)
