Singer and performer Bradley Greenwald brings warmth and light during the days before the winter solstice with The Longest Night, a new piece presented at Open Eye Figure Theatre. The solstice marks the longest night of the year, with the days slowly getting longer (though, alas, not any warmer) throughout winter. Greenwald's collection of songs and poems looks at numerous facets not just of the solstice, but the many cultural and religious celebrations centered on the holidays. Using the music of J.S. Bach, Leonard Cohen, and Dar Williams and the writings of Margaret Atwood and Ogden Nash, Greenwald and accompanist Sonja Thompson will continue a tradition of celebrating the solstice that goes back to the earliest days of civilization. Greenwald has been seen on stages throughout the Twin Cities, including turns this year with Theatre Latte Da (Steerage Song) and the Jungle Theater (Urinetown). His work at the Jungle has earned him an Ivey (for I Am My Own Wife), while he has earned plenty of accolades with the Children's Theatre Company, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, and Frank Theatre. He has also performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and Skylark Opera, and on A Prairie Home Companion. (Photo by Mark Vancleave)
