Anaïs Mitchell

Vermont folkie Anaïs Mitchell can sound precious when her voice is at its most waif-like, but she can summon a great deal more depth and substance when she wants. She's also a thoughtful and ambitious songwriter who recast the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus as a folk opera in the context of American hard times. Her latest project, Child Ballads (up for a slew of U.K. awards), tackles seven of the often harrowing 17th- and 18th-century English and Scottish ballads collected by 19th-century folklorist Francis James Child, a resource for dozens of artists. Joining Mitchell on this performance on the Real-Phonic Radio Hour will be Bon Iver's Michael Lewis. The opening set by Eric Koskinen and the Real-Phonic Band will include Lewis, Dave Simonett, and additional guests.
