All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914

Those in need of a fresh infusion of holiday mirth need look no further than All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914. On a sparsely arrangeded stage, three actors — Matthew Rein, David Roberts, and Alan Sorenson — backed by the dazzling arrangements of vocal ensemble Cantus, recount an historic event of truly exceptional goodwill. With dialogue drawn from actual letters, official reports, first-person testimonials, and other corroborating documents, the production movingly recreates a remarkable Christmas Eve in the notoriously deadly trenches of WWI's Western Front, wherein opposing armies set aside their weapons for a momentary armistice in honor of the season. Exchanging songs instead of bullets, the soldiers established an unexpected camaraderie that defied the jingoistic orders of warring nationalities. Written by Peter Rothstein with musical arrangements by Erick Lichte and Timothy C. Takach, All Is Calm serves as a soothing holiday tonic, restoring faith in the season with a stirring example of universal humanity. (Photo by George Byron Griffiths)
