Tower of Power's blistering horns and wickedly funky grooves will reign for four nights on the band's annual return to the Dakota. Founding members Emilio Castillo and Doc Kupka — on tenor and bari saxophone, respectively — continue to spark the 45-year-old 10-piece's marvelously muscular, tenaciously tight, furiously funky trademark R&B, forever defined as Oakland soul. Currently, there's a new album, Hipper Than Hip, taken from a fiery 1974 radio studio performance; Ray McKinley is currently subbing for longtime bassist Rocco Prestia, who's awaiting a kidney transplant; and this is a swan song of sorts for vocalist Larry Braggs, who will be leaving the band at the end of the year after being onboard since 1999.
Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, 7 & 9 p.m.; Thu., Dec. 12, 8 & 10 p.m. Starts: Dec. 11. Continues through Dec. 14, 2013
