Red Fang aren't the heaviest metal band, or the most technical, or even the catchiest. What makes the Portland four-member a force is that they're formidable on all three counts. On this year's Whales and Leeches, they've made their choruses more direct, their riffs tidier. It's a walk in the park compared to many similarly doomy albums, but fortunately for the purists, RF had the foresight to throw in a few absolute jarrings to make up for the relative easy-listening found elsewhere. "No Hope," for one, approximates Trash Talk's modern hardcore. With Shrine and Radkey. 18+.
