More About

The knotty title of HIJACK's newly commissioned work could serve as a template for the duo of Kristen Van Loon and Arwen Wilder: serious play with compulsive shifts of register from the mundane to the miraculous. This timely and cumulative piece celebrates 20 years of choreography, and features guests Jennifer Arave, Tom Lloyd, Morgan Thorson, and Craig VanTrees, who will perform alongside HIJACK in expanded duets that include found sound and exotic wardrobe. Over two decades, HIJACK has created a body of work that brings tight compositional form to rampaging ideas — rather like the inside of your head on a good day. Wilder and Van Loon are self-proclaimed dancing sculptors, builders, and architects. Never arbitrary in their assembly, they aim to show how the imagination really functions to find links between dissimilar things. For their new work, they will draw inspiration from several ballet barres with histories, a rambling and really funny Neal Medlyn cover, alternative spaces (like Red Eye) in which HIJACK has performed, and Walker Art Center-esque meditations on high modernism. "We invite and challenge the audience to change by viewing this dance and, as a result, reenter the world seeing beauty in new and unexpected ways and places," says the duo (in unison, of course).
