On her second full-length, Back to Forever, Lissie Maurus initially comes on like vintage Stevie Nicks. The first two songs, "The Habit" and "Further Away (Romance Police)," lope along on a driving Mick Fleetwood-like beat, with the Rock Island, Illinois, native's maroon, intriguingly textured voice negotiating classic California pop hooks while dissecting the hazards of love. Most of the subsequent tunes, however, have even more rocking bite, thanks to Jacknife Lee's production. When her magnificent, siren-like howl isn't slicing and dicing relationships, Lissie beefs up her heartland-rocker credentials, tackling the erosion of American ideals and the angst of undervalued working stiffs. Chicago pop-rockers Purple Apple open. 18+.
