John Legend

Neo soul icon John Legend's latest album, Love in the Future, reflects the five-year wait since his last outing. It's too long (16 tracks), and too stacked with big-name producers needlessly overstuffing many of the arrangements. Even with these flaws it largely makes for riveting listening due to Legend's stubborn insistence on straddling the worlds of both smooth old-school crooner — he tackles Bobby Caldwell's 1980 soft-rock jam "Open Your Eyes" — and rhythmically bumpin' modern-day lothario on "Save the Night."
