Leaves

Savage Umbrella brings back its critically acclaimed homage to Walt Whitman this week with the music-filled Leaves, a piece that was originally produced in 2010. Using Whitman's timeless poetry as source material, the theater company creates a story that involves movement, character, and original songs composed by Candace Bilyk and Bet Mattson with music direction by Ted Moore. Like Savage Umbrella's recent production of Rain Follows the Plow, Leaves attempts to navigate and interact with American culture, re-contextualizing traditional narratives of what makes a great American play. With much of the same cast and creative team working on the project, including playwrights Tanner Curl and Laura Leffler-McCabe and director Blake E. Bolan, Savage Umbrella revisits the collaboratively developed work with new music and an updated script. For more info, visit savageumbrella.org. (Photo by Carl Atiya Swanson)
