Allen Toussaint

A New Orleans icon as indispensable as a shrimp po-boy, Allen Toussaint has had a profound influence on the music of the Crescent City and far beyond over the last half-century. He has a new solo album recorded live at New York's Joe's Pub called Songbook, featuring some tunes that defined the city ("It's Raining"), carried the likes of Ernie K-Doe and Lee Dorsey up the charts ("Mother-in-Law," "Working in the Coal Mine"), and been covered by legions ("Get Out of My Life, Woman," "Brickyard Blues"). After Hurricane Katrina destroyed his house and studio, Toussaint returned to performing, weaving his songs into a soulful tapestry linked by erudite storytelling and masterful piano work.
