Shana Kaplow's video work from her Close to Home series has been exhibited at the Austro-Sino Arts Program in Beijing, China, where she was also an artist in residence at the Red Gate International Art Residency. Her work touches on her experiences as an American artist who has lived in China, and as an adoptive mother to a daughter born there. Meng Teng, born in China and currently faculty in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota, has created a sculpture, Land of the Free, that invites participants to plant their own red flags on the piece. Both artists will discuss their cultural and aesthetic explorations at the Third Place Gallery, where their work is on display. Personal experiences of foreignness, perspectives on American and Chinese culture, and art making will be hot topics. There is a $5-$10 suggested donation for those who attend, and karaoke and ping-pong games will commence after the talk.
