Janelle Monáe

The Electric Lady is a bold title considering the Hendrix implications, but then, few are as capable as neo-soul auteur Janelle Monáe. For 2010's The ArchAndroid, Monáe seemingly went centuries into the future and brought back textures that would sound vital in any era. Among its highlights were the space-pop of "Cold War" and the Big Boi collaboration "Tightrope." With Electric, it's more a mix of throwbacks and progression. The fluttering Miguel collaboration "Primetime" might be the best R&B duet this side Usher and Alicia Keys's "My Boo." As for the Prince-assisted "Givin Em What They Love," it has a krautrock pulse but is nowhere near as stiff as that might imply. 16+.
