More About

Theaters looking for a challenge often turn to Bertolt Brecht. The early 20th-century German playwright experimented with theatrical forms and storytelling, pulling apart expectations and piecing together work that was political, personal, and often incendiary. For a group like Theatre Pro Rata, which emphasizes playwrights and the text of the work, Brecht is a natural fit. The company opens its 13th season with Good Woman of Setzuan, a parable about morals and ethics started while Brecht was still in Germany and completed while he was in exile in the United States in the early 1940s (the work had its American premiere at Hamline University in 1948). The play follows Shen Te, the one "good" person in her town, despite being a prostitute who is trod upon by her neighbors and other townsfolk. Director Carin Bratlie knows that the Pro Rata audience is thrilled when the company tackles Brecht, and this work is one she has itched to produce since she first read it 20 years ago. The company features Kelsey Cramer as Shen Te and Ben Layne as Wong. (Photo by Charlie Gorrill)
