Organized by Rain Taxi Review of Books (to which I contribute occasional articles), the Twin Cities Book Festival is an annual rush of readings, panels, signings, kid-geared performances, booth-browsing, and schmoozing from which bookworms of a stereotypically retiring bent might need weeks to recover. Nearly every local literary organization will be on hand, usually with stuff to sell, and the visiting readers are typically diverse. Nicholson Baker, one of his generation's most individual and influential writers, returns to the fest in support of his just-issued novel, Traveling Sprinkler, which revisits the amiable narrator of 2009's The Anthologist. Rae Armantrout first emerged as one of the Language poets, and writes with uncommon intellect and wit yet sidesteps coldness. Her 2009 collection, Versed, was a deserving Pulitzer Prize winner. Other featured readers include filmmaker, critic, and author Ytasha L. Womack; How to Talk Minnesotan dialectician Howard Mohr; Romanian man of letters Mircea Cartarescu; and picture-book creator David Wiesner. For more info, visit www.raintaxi.com/bookfest.
