More About

Michelle Hensley and Ten Thousand Things have created one of Minnesota's most vibrant and ingenious theaters out of a simple concept: produce work that can reach any audience. That doesn't mean dumbing down the content, but performing with such energy and honesty that anyone — even those behind bars and seeing a live play for the first time — can be swept up in the story. The proof of that? The company's most successful pieces are often the works of Shakespeare. To open their 20th season in the Twin Cities, Hensley will bring her directing touch to the fantastical comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream for free community performances and four weekends of paid shows at Open Book. The company uses sparse sets, very few props, no lighting, and live music along with a dedicated small company of talented actors, here including Gavin Lawrence, Mo Perry, Anna Sundberg, Kurt Kwan, Sun Mee Chomet, and Karen Wiese-Thompson as Puck. The play offers plenty of challenges — crisscrossing lovers, a cold war among the fairies, a pack of "rude mechanicals" rehearsing a play — and even more opportunities for invigorating theater.
