Sarah Lee Guthrie is the granddaughter of Woody Guthrie, and Johnny Irion is the grandnephew of author John Steinbeck, and their songwriting reflects that pedigree throughout their fourth album, Wassaic Way. After debuting their pastoral-pop project with the Twin Cities' own Gary Louris producing 2005's Exploration, they have this time enlisted Wilco's Jeff Tweedy behind the boards. The duo's voices boast an endearing slightly askew quality that keeps the proceedings a safe distance from placid adult contemporary terrain, and Tweedy favors a layered production sensibility that's unafraid to get mildly weird.
