More About

This week, Mixed Blood Theater kicks off the third year of its "radical hospitality" program. That means there will be free admission on a first come, first served basis for playwright Aditi Kapil's new opus, Displaced Hindu Gods. The series is a trilogy based on the stories of Hindu deities. The three plays — Brahman/i: A One-Hijra Stand-Up Comedy Show, directed by Jeremy Cohen; The Chronicles of Kalki, directed by Bruce A. Young; and Shiv, directed by Risa Brainin — place Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva in contemporary settings as a way of exploring issues such as displacement, identity, immigration, and coming of age. Audiences can see each work individually on weeknights, or plan for a marathon viewing on Saturdays and Sundays. Kapil's work has already stirred up controversy from conservative Hindu groups, who haven't yet read or seen the plays. Folks can get in on discussions on cultural appropriation, the use of the sacred in a theatrical context, and other issues brought up in each piece during one of the post-show talks offered after some weeknight performances. Visit www.mixedblood.com for a complete schedule of times. In previews October 2-4. All three shows will be presented Saturdays and Sundays; The Chronicles of Kalki runs Wednesdays; Shiv on Thursdays; Brahman/i on Fridays and late-night Saturdays. (Image by Rich Ryan)
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 5. Continues through Oct. 27, 2013
