More About

When Carrie: The Musical opened on Broadway in 1988 it quickly became a sensation, but for all the wrong reasons. The adaptation of Stephen King's debut had a disastrous short run that quickly became the stuff of Broadway flop legends. In fact, a book tracing the history of musical failures on the Great White Way was titled Not Since Carrie. Over the years, a solid cult following emerged for the piece, and a completely retooled version returned to New York in 2012 to stronger notices and a longer run (46 performances in a limited run, versus the five of the 1988 eight-million-dollar flop). All of that is prologue for Minneapolis Musical Theatre's take on the work, which opens this weekend. MMT has long championed eccentric and oddball work, from its early hit Batboy: The Musical to Zombie Prom to the gory Evil Dead. Here, writer Lawrence D. Cohen (also responsible for the original Carrie screenplay) teams up with songwriters Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford for a ride through the troubled life of social outcast and budding telekinetic Carrie White. Stephen Meerdink directs the production, while Jill Iverson stars as Carrie. She is joined by Lori Maxwell as her crazed mother, Margaret, while a large ensemble takes on the roles of Carrie's classmates and teachers as they hurtle toward the worst prom in history.
