Margaret Atwood, one of contemporary literature’s most respected (not to mention bestselling) authors, takes the stage at the Fitzgerald Theater for Talking Volumes this October. The book club will bring her in to discuss the final installment of her dystopian sci-fi trilogy, MaddAddam (Doubleday). The book picks up where its predecessors left off, bringing the two story threads and their respective characters together as they ally with newly discovered companions in their post-apocalyptic world. There’s Snowman-the-Jimmy, the disgruntled leader of the Crakers, a genetically engineered human-like species; Toby, our stern yet lovable narrator who eventually takes on a leadership role; her lover, Zeb, whose murky and questionable past pulls at the present; and friends Ren and Amanda, who were previously rescued from prisoners turned merciless killers the Painballers. Together, this unlikely team must face another Painballer attack and navigate the limits of humankind. Atwood's world is marvelously crafted, and the narrative is rife wit and compassion. The Toronto native has received much acclaim for her countless (and wildly diverse) books, including the 2000 Booker Prize for The Blind Assassin. Atwood is a spunky and vivacious speaker, so her talk is certain to be a memorable. Can't make it to the Fitzgerald? Tune in to MPR for the broadcast. (Photo by Jean Malek)
