A member of Miles Davis's fusion-pioneering Bitches Brew-era band, Dave Holland forged a lengthy career as one of jazz's most accomplished bass players as well as its most eclectic, working in myriad formats and venturing into folk and rock. His stellar new quartet, Prism, harkens back to his work with Miles, whipping together uncompromising threads of jazz, rock, and funk and creating a new entity that's both earthy and probes the astral plane, sharply cerebral yet strikingly visceral. Prism's lineup features pianist Craig Taborn, guitarist Kevin Eubanks, and drummer Eric Harland. All wrote tunes on Prism's eponymous debut, with the raging electric guitar of Eubanks, the former Tonight Show band leader, perhaps leading the way while Taborn's Fender Rhodes dances with pointillist sparkle, Harland's taut explosions bristle and sigh, and Holland's rich bass holds it all together.
Saturdays, Sundays, 7 & 9 p.m. Starts: Sept. 28. Continues through Sept. 29, 2013
