Explorer Will Steger may be best known for being the first person to reach both Poles via dogsled. But over the span of his 50-plus year career as an educator, adventurist, environmentalist, and photographer, he has also worked to improve clothing, tools, and equipment for arctic travel. And while he may always remain an explorer at heart, he has also invested quite a bit of effort creating a home base as well. The Steger Wilderness Center for Innovation and Leadership, located near Ely, Minnesota, is built using sustainable designs, and upon completion Steger hopes to host scientists, environmentalists, and other thinkers to exchange ideas on permanent solutions to environmental problems. The exhibition at MCAD Gallery will boast photography of his travels and his new space, as well as clothing, sketches, video, woodwork, and other items. There will be an artist's talk at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 19, and a public reception from 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 4.
