Hubbard Street Dance Chicago

Chicago, that City of the Big Shoulders, has produced a sleek and dexterous dance company in Hubbard Street Dance, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The troupe opens the Northrop Dance Series with an ambitious repertory concert that includes works by Swedish choreographer Max Ek, resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, and Robyn Mineko Williams. In Ek's "Casi-Casa," common household objects (a stove, a vacuum cleaner) take on surreal dimensions to music by the Swedish band Fleshquartet. (And where's the baby? Don't ask). Cerrudo's "Pacopepepluto" features three men "vividly aswirl in a lateral current," as New York Times critic Brian Seibert puts it, to music by Dean Martin. And "Little Mortal Jump" showcases this lively group doing what it does best: getting down and movin' on out. (Photo by Todd Rosenberg)
