MinnAnimate II

Now in its second year, MinnAnimate at the Ritz Theater showcases the best animated shorts in Minnesota and the upper Midwest, with an emphasis on artist-created pieces. "Uproot," by Oahn Vu, is the second video in a series about Xuan Nguyen and Hiep Vu, who have immigrated from Vietnam to New Ulm. "Minnesota and Transplant," by Trevor Adams, was hand-sketched onto pre-exposed 16mm film, and explores the origins of the universe through bits of life from bicyclists, puppeteers, and posers. If you missed it at MSPIFF this year, MinnAnimate offers another chance to see "Marcel, King of Tervuren" by Tom Schroeder. The Greek tragedy, acted out by Belgian roosters, was nominated for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. During the event, there will also be a section, titled MinnAnimate Jr., highlighting short films created by Minnesota youth through various summer programs. Other animators include Emily Fritze, a recent MCAD graduate; Dave and Mary Sandberg; and John Akre, who will be showing two shorts. Screenings will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers. For more info, visit Minnanimate.com.
