Even for those who diligently avoid looking back, a person's past has a way of shadowing the present, offering reminders of an earlier life that can never be entirely left behind. No matter how inconvenient, one never knows when past debts will come due, or what will be owed to whom. Such a situation connects Margie to Mike in playwright David Lindsay-Abaire's Tony-award winning comedy, Good People. Set for its area premiere at Park Square Theatre, Good People revolves around the efforts of Margie, a down on her luck lifelong resident of south Boston, to reconnect with Mike, a distant boyfriend who managed to escape their working-class neighborhood to become a prosperous doctor. What begins as an earnest attempt by Margie to obtain employment through a past connection quickly becomes a recrimination filled debate over Mike's self-righteous conviction that he is as solely responsible for his rarefied success as Margie is for her habitual misfortune. Fueled with sparring humor, the work questions the definition of a "good person" and asks if such distinctions carry qualifiers. Director Joel Sass, one of the most energetic craftsmen in Twin Cities theater, is sure to bring a compelling drive to the work, especially with a top notch cast headlined by Virginia Burke and James Denton. Even nostalgia haters are likely to remember this one fondly. In previews through September 20. (Photo by Petronella Ytsma)
