Who is better qualified to clean up a high school's drug problem than a clean-living, strong-willed guidance counselor? That's the premise behind Desperate Lives, an early-'80s after-school special with a strong message: Drugs are baaaad. Teen siblings Scott and Sandy (played by a young Helen Hunt) Cameron appear to be wholesome and life-loving students. Things go horribly awry, however, when Sandy shouts, "Bugs!" and flings herself through a glass window while on angel dust made in the school's chem lab. Meanwhile, Scott manages to drive himself and his girlfriend off a cliff after getting high. Enter guidance counselor Eileen Phillips, who makes it her mission to set her strung-out students straight. The irony: You may have to resort to self-medicating to get through this one. Thankfully, the snarky Women in Crisis folks will be boozing it up and mocking the show right alongside you with bitchy commentary and plenty of drug trivia.
