Dan Bruggeman

Given just one glance, Dan Bruggeman's etchings and acrylics are not always what they seem. While he merges his interests in art and science in his nature-based work, he also juxtaposes nature and culture, the pristine and human detritus, the lovely and something else lurking alongside it. His inspiration comes from his St. Paul neighborhood, but also in what he sees driving through the St. Croix and Minnesota River Valleys. "There," he says, "I've experienced the kind of scenery that has prompted me to conclude that all landscapes are a collection of metaphoric or symbolic meanings." Through Bruggeman's eyes, however, we're given views that collect, complicate, and urge us to meditate on objects natural and not. Also on exhibition at Groveland are Tom Maakestad's oil-pastel rural landscapes. There will be an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, September 6. (Dan Bruggeman, Park Hill and Overlook)
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 6. Continues through Oct. 19, 2013
