Lyle Lovett and His Large Band

Quirky, lanky, wry, and sly, flecked with horse wrangler's dust and a hipster's sense of surrealism, Lyle Lovett has been following his own eclectic trail for nigh on 30 years. The sounds he's threaded through the Texas sage have ranged from blues to western swing, country, folk, pop, and jump jazz, all seemingly weathered by the prairie wind but also tinged with an impish glint, a touch of irreverent wisdom. Last year's Release Me had a dual meaning. It was the final release of Lovett's long association with the Curb/Lost Highway label and also referred to his fine, twangy-tragic duet with k.d. lang on that classic heartbreaker. As usual, he's all over the map, from swaggering blues to bluegrass to punchy, horn-driven soulful rock and gospel, topping them all with an ambling soul-folk reading of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man."
