For many, dance is an art form that — aside from the limited repertoire gleaned at wedding receptions — is best practiced by professionals. Perceived as a specialized skill, contemporary dance has had an especially difficult time appealing to an outside audience. Local dance advocate Kimberly Peterson, however, is calling everyone to the floor with her newly curated project, Impetus. Hosted by the Soap Factory, Impetus is a four-day festival in which attendees are not only privy to the creative process, but are encouraged to participate in the direction. Named for the energy inherent to moving bodies, Impetus brings together talented choreographers (BodyCartography Project, Non Edwards, Emily Gastineau, Paul Herwig, Dustin Maxwell, Jes Nelson, Tamara Ober, Vanessa Voskuil) to expound upon the core tenets of modern dance, share interpretive insights, and demonstrate basic movements. Absolutely no experience is required to join in the daily sessions and workshops, whether involving improvisation techniques, composition styles, or meditation practices. When not instructing attendees, guest choreographers will be actively seeking feedback on original works scheduled to be unveiled during the closing gala on Saturday night. By encouraging such immersive participation regardless of background, Impetus hopes to provide enough fun and encouragement to make even the most obstinate of flat-footed wallflowers eager to get their groove on.
