The proliferation of charismatic trombone-wielding New Orleans bandleaders includes Trombone Shorty, Glen David Andrews, Tremé's Antoine Batiste, and, maybe the funkiest of all, Big Sammie Williams, whose Funky Nation regularly rockets the party into the stratosphere. Big Sam absorbed the Crescent City's funky brass band sound as a member of the Dirty Dozen, Soul Rebels, and, way back, Lil' Stooges Brass Band, along the way being mentored by jazz saxophone great Kidd Jordan. Integrating wicked and psychedelic funk from the likes of P-Funk, Sly, and Earth, Wind & Fire with NOLA brass band tradition, jazz, and rock, Sam and his furious, super-tight Nation's trademark Noladelic Powerfunk kick the funk into overdrive. It's serious, take no prisoners, booty shakin' dance stuff fueled by blazing horns, searing electric guitar, sweaty vocals, and merciless beats, captured on last year's Funky Donkey EP and 2010's aptly dubbed King of the Party.
