After last year's smashing success, the Ultimate Master of Words is back with a second installment. Eight writers will face off in what the Loft Literary Center is calling a "literary battle royale." The goal? To see who can make up the most creative (and let's be honest: funny) faux definitions to a slew of ridiculous-but-real words in the English language. The locally sourced contenders are poet Lisa Brimmer; sci-fi man-about-town and l'etoile contributor Rob Callahan; 89.3 the Current DJ Jacquie Fuller; author Faith Sullivan, who is a Milkweed Editions-favorite; spoken-word poet Ed Bok Lee; hilarious up-and-comer Katie Sisneros; Chaun Webster, founder of Free Poet's Press; and improv genius Anna Weggel. With so many entertaining competitors pitted against each other, it's impossible to tell who will come out on top. Three heavy-hitting judges will preside over the evening: Doomtree's Dessa, novelist and beloved creative writing teacher (at both the U of M and the Loft) Brian Malloy, and Emily Weiss, founder and creator of fashion website Into the Gloss. While the audience will ultimately decide the winner, the judges will no doubt dispense their own pithy opinions and observations to the audience's glee. Stephanie Curtis of Minnesota Public Radio's Daily Circuit will emcee. Get there at 6:30 for a pre-event drink.
