The MMAA Project Space will be revisiting the Twin Cities' art world of the past for its latest exhibition, "The Studio Sessions: Minnesota Artists in the 1970s." Interestingly, a project from the decade, by photographer Victor Bloomfield, will give details and insight into this bygone era. During the early '70s, the University of Minnesota science professor documented the major players on the scene through a series of portraits and in-studio shots. Participants included folks such as Frank Gaard, Anthony Caponi, Hazel Belvo, James Kielkopf, Jerry Ott, Katherine Nash, Warren MacKenzie, and other local talents whose names you might recognize — either for their work or the buildings, parks, and gallery spaces now named after them. Gallery owners and museum directors were part of the series as well. For the current exhibition, 34 of Bloomfield's photographs will be on display, and for each of the 30 local artists featured, a piece of work will accompany their image. The opening reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, August 15, will feature jazz, funk, and soul tunes from Booka B, and an introduction from Bloomfield. Seventies attire is highly recommended.
