As a stage adaptation, Singin' in the Rain has always had the decked stacked against success. The source material, after all, is frequently counted among the most beloved musicals in Hollywood history. Considering the film's revered reputation, stage variations have long seemed destined to suffer by comparison. Bloomington Civic Theatre, however, has never shied away from ambitious undertakings. For this newest adaptation, the theater appears to be hewing closely to the familiar storyline of how the advent of sound in movies instigates professional and romantic chaos for a quartet of performers. Taking on the work's central roles is a promising cast of C. Ryan Shipley as striving actor Don Lockwood, Jeffrey C. Nelson as comic sidekick Cosmo Brown, Rachel Weber as the pampered prima donna Lina Lamont, and Holly Richgels as the rising ingénue Kathy Selden. Whereas big-budget Broadway versions of the work have prioritized razzle-dazzle spectacle to win over audiences, the Bloomington Civic Theatre's more modest performance space will require creativity to achieve such pageantry. Showstopping arrangements, however, are all but guaranteed by the decision to entrust Michael Matthew Ferrell, one of the most celebrated choreographers in the Twin Cities, as the director. Backed by a score of iconic songs, Singin' in the Rain aims to reinvigorate a familiar story with crowd-pleasing vitality and captivating originality. (Photo by Vicki Madsen)
