Local artist Joan Vorderbruggen has been quite busy the past couple of years, curating the "Artist in Storefronts" series, designing up-cycled clothing for Lollycopter, and preparing to turn Block E into an illuminated pop-up gallery experience this September. Meanwhile, she has put together her first solo exhibition, "Sincerely yours, Carl E." at the Ledge Gallery. The show's namesake comes from a dear friend and pen pal who she met while working as a nurse in a home for adults with mental illness. During her time there the two bonded, and continued to keep in touch via snail mail after Vorderbruggen moved to New York City. Over the next four years, Carl E. penned over 250 letters, sharing life lessons, daily thoughts, memories, and opinions on current events. For the exhibition, Vorderbruggen has transcribed those letters, stitching his handwriting into men's handkerchiefs. There will be an artist's talk in the space at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 16, followed by a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Open by appointment.
