A major folk-music figure in her native U.K. since her late teens, Laura Marling hasn't quite made the same waves yet stateside (even as her former flame Marcus Mumford has ascended to arena-headlining status with a more bombastic take on folk-rock). On her just-released fourth album, Once I Was an Eagle, 23-year-old Marling purposely sets her music at a slower burn. Eschewing her normal backing band, most of Marling's latest tunes explore her formidable acoustic fretwork and haunting voice, with spare accents supplied by hand drums and cello. The literate album makes for a worthy addition alongside the likes of Joni Mitchell's Blue for anyone seeking to build up their collection of windy and thoughtful folk recordings.
