Majical Cloudz

The first Majical Cloudz album, 2011's II, was an underwhelming, hissing, meandering effort that never quite knew what it wanted to be. The Montreal-based duo's new one, Impersonators, is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor, and confirms mastermind Devon Welsh as one of the most singular vocalists in independent music. The album's Laurie Anderson-indebted sonics, often sparse, drumless, and glacial, are hard to place. "Ambient pop," perhaps? Welsh carries most of the weight himself, with a voice that can be every bit as effortlessly wrenching as Antony Hegarty's. With Moon King. 18+. (Photo by Denis Nazarov)
