Storyteller Kevin Kling may have his gig with MPR — including popular shows at the Fitzgerald — and a pair of books coming out this fall, but he hasn't forgotten his theatrical roots. Kling is once again collaborating with Open Eye Figure Theatre for a new piece, Humanimal. Since 2007, the group has produced a late-summer, limited-run show at Open Eye's tiny (90-seat) south Minneapolis theater, tackling topics like religion (2011's Joice, Rejoice) and politics (last year's excellent Politico). In Humanimal, Kling and company explore how humans and animals live together in some kind of harmony. The creative team includes Kling, Open Eye's Michael Sommers, and longtime musical collaborators Simone Perrin, Jacqueline Ultan, and Michelle Kinney. Kling has drawn inspiration from Jack London's classic explorations of the animal world. The show will cast the relationship between humans and animals as, well, a relationship: with a halting beginning, smooth middle, and eventual crisis point. Expect plenty of stories, songs, and unexpected insights into our lives with dogs, cats, and other creatures. (Photo courtesy of Ann Marsden)
