Vampire Weekend

Now that cynics have mostly given up on jokes about boat shoes, Vampire Weekend are finally getting their due. This year's acclaimed Modern Vampires of the City somehow pulls off more universal songwriting paired with a more distinct expression of the band's personality. Ezra Koenig's voice sounds genuine when dwelling on death, the hereafter, and the increasingly blurry feeling of time moving forward. Still, "Dying Young" is too first-draft; title it "Diane Young." Add enigmatic depth in the form of shoutouts to Souls of Mischief, and spiritual ambivalence ("what Holy water contains/a little drop, little drop for me?") and the material resonates as audience-ready text and personal subtext alike. The only thing keeping them from being one of the defining bands of their generation? It's never entirely clear what generation it's meant for. A good sign. (Photo by Soren Solkaer Starbird)
