Tour de Fat 2013

Afro'ed cyclists in short-shorts and artfully torn pink tights. Vintage beach cruisers with tennis-shoe tires. Mustachioed men on penny farthings and ultra-skinny-jean kids on Bunyan-tall bikes. All of these will be rolling together this Saturday in a self-proclaimed "ballyhoo of bikes and beer" that celebrates the car-free, beer-plenty lifestyle. New Belgium's annual Tour De Fat is a free, family-friendly festival devoted to the weird and wild side of our pedal-powered community. The tour will begin with a slow-moving, all-skill-levels parade at 11 a.m. that will be, according to New Belgium's Facebook event page, "meandering, pandering, and Ned Flandering" through downtown, and then culminate with hours and hours of live music and beer consumption at Loring Park. There are themed tents and events to visit, too, like the Bike Pit and the Slow Ride. New Belgium's festival will hit 12 cities this year, including Denver, Tampa, Chicago, and our very own Bike City. Last year's Minneapolis event drew 3,000 revelers, and raised beaucoup bucks — $19,000, to be exact — for bicycle charities. So throw on your neon-green leggings and tape some rainbow streamers to your Schwinn; it's time to get Fat Tired. For more info, visit www.facebook.com/TourDeFat.
