Dr. John's 2012 collaboration with the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, Locked Down, won a Grammy (his sixth) for Best Blues Album and raised his national profile probably higher than it's been since his 1973 hit single, "Right Place, Wrong Time." But good as the album is, with its down-and-dirty second line swamp funk and fiery apocalyptical rants (in the widely played "Revolution"), those who praised it as his best in years simply haven't been paying attention to a varied and extensive discography that ranges from Big Easy classics to tributes to Duke Ellington and Johnny Mercer. Here the good Dr. will lead a jazz- and R&B-steeped quintet dubbed the Nite Trippers, several of whom, including trombonist/music director Sarah Morrow, toured with Ray Charles. Opener Sonny Landreth is a southwest Louisiana native, a brilliant slide guitarist, and an accomplished songwriter. His latest, Elemental Journey, is an all-instrumental affair inspired by a wide swath of blues, jazz, rock, and zydeco.
