A creepy crooner par excellence, trucker-turned-troubadour Daughn Gibson continues to turn heads with his unique brand of electronically tinged pitch-black Americana. Gibson's just released sophomore album, Me Moan, his first for pseudo-indie juggernaut Sub Pop, boasts equal measures of grit and groove. Tunes like "Phantom Rider" twinkle and glide musically but never get too airy, tethered as they are to Gibson's seriously low register and smoky twang. While he sports a surprisingly strong pop sensibility as a songwriter, Gibson's also thankfully not afraid to get gothic and weird ("Franco") or boisterous and bluesy ("Kissin' on the Blacktop") when the occasion calls for it.
