9 to 5: The Musical

For those wondering how the movie translates to the stage, 9 to 5: The Musical is a lot like 9 to 5 the movie, only more so. The slapstick plot of three women getting revenge on their horrid boss is still there, but it has been augmented by a bevy of new Dolly Parton-penned songs to go with the famous title tune. The three women at the center of the story also get to go on a more complete emotional journey, aided by songs that illustrate their inner feelings. Beyond that, "it will be a fun summer show that harkens back to a movie everyone loves," says Trent Boyum, who directs the new Minnetonka Theatre production of the musical. Taking on the roles made famous by Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin are local theater vets Jen Burleigh-Bentz (Violet), Stacey Lindell (Judy), and Kendall Thompson (Doralee). All three have trodden the boards in Minnetonka before, with Thompson starring as Dorothy and Cinderella while in high school. John Trones returns to the theater to play the Dabney Coleman role as the supremely sexist and boorish boss, Franklin Hart Jr. "It's kind of horrifying the things he says, but that was pretty much common practice [in the 1970s]," says Trones. The production features a cast of 40, and also includes a taped appearance by Parton herself at the beginning and end of the show. (Image by Dana Akre-Fens)
