For those seeking satire in the Twin Cities, the obvious place to start is at a performance of the Brave New Workshop (BNW). But while the venerable comedy institution can always be relied upon for an evening of irreverent laughs, satire aficionados know that even more incisive hysterics can be found in the well-honed comedic chops of the Recovery Party. Founded in 1999 by Joshua Will, an Emmy Award-winning alumnus of the BNW, the Recovery Party can be thought of as the Mensa Society for local comics. The group's latest production, Push Button Get Bacon, is yet another inspired showcase of sketches and songs, written in workshop collaboration by such acclaimed humorists as Matt Craig, Shanan Custer, Tane Danger, Logan Martin, and Jim Robinson. If these credits weren't impressive enough, the cast includes such eminently funny folks as Jeffrey Cloninger, Jim Robinson, Andrea Guilford, Dennis Curley, and Jen Marin. Touching upon the cultural absurdities of 3.2 beer, shopping at JC Penny, the unnerving oddness of pharmaceutical ads, and existential musings over circular timelines, the Recovery Party should have free reign to find the humor in everyday lunacy. About the only thing audiences shouldn't expect is actual bacon, which ultimately doesn't matter since eating is nearly impossible when caught in the midst of convulsive laughter.
Fridays, Saturdays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 12. Continues through July 27, 2013
